China-based lithium-ion battery manufacturer CATL for electric vehicles introduced the third generation Qilin battery pack with a volume utilization efficiency of 72%. The company said that CTP 3.0 batteries can provide electric vehicles with a range of more than 1,000 km on a single charge.
Production will start next year
CATL first announced its cell-to-package (CTP) technology in 2019. Following the first generation batteries with a volume utilization efficiency of over 50%, the newly introduced CTP 3.0 comes with an energy density of 255 Wh/kg. The company says the new batteries are 13% higher than the energy density of Tesla’s 4680 battery cells.
The battery manufacturer placed the liquid cooling element, which is generally located under the battery cells, between the cells. In this way, the company quadrupled the heat transfer area. Increasing the heat transfer area allows for better thermal control and faster heating of the battery cells in cold weather for better performance.
With the CTP 3.0, the company states that it can be charged from 10% to 80% in ten minutes. Providing batteries to many global vehicle manufacturers, CATL will start mass production of CTP 3.0 (Qilin) batteries in 2023.
