The creative team on Stray’s animated film remains confidential, but Robert Baird, president of Annapurna Animation, said the film is in active development and will be “the best hopepunk movie ever made”.
Stary is becoming a movie and more to come
Baird defines “hopepunk” as a narrative concept that sees optimism as a form of resistance to tyranny. This pretty much defines the emotional tone of the game, so Annapurna is basically on the right track. Additionally, it has been confirmed that the game’s companion drone, the B-12, will be a big part of the movie. We can say that this duo will bear the burden of humor in the movie.
The company’s animation arm has announced a few more movies and heralded many more. Ice Age creator Chris Wedge will direct a movie called FOO, short for Fish Out of Water, and Nimona co-director Nick Bruno has signed on to direct an untitled project that has simply been described as “high-concept” and “Spielbergian.”
The company also stated that other games under its umbrella may also receive movie treatment. Other titles on the publisher’s list include the time-cycle thriller Twelve Minutes starring Daisy Ridley and James McAvoy, the sci-fi action-adventure game Outer Wilds, and the narrative mystery Kentucky Route Zero. In fact, any of these could be a good movie.
