Can We Step on the Surface of Jupiter, a Giant Sphere of Gas?

Jupiter, the largest planet in the Solar System, is a giant sphere of gas. So what kind of place is Jupiter, can we stand on its surface, what will happen to us if we reach its surface?

Suppose you have completed a long journey to Jupiter as a result of successful planning and you are near the planet.

Let’s take a look at what will happen to you as you continue your journey.

First of all, if you don’t have a special spacesuit, you would die within 1-2 minutes at best, since there is no oxygen at any point in Jupiter’s atmosphere.

So let’s assume you have a special outfit and move on. Jupiter is made entirely of gas, meaning it has no solid surface. Therefore, just as we cannot walk on air, we cannot walk on the gases in Jupiter, so there is no concept of footstepping.

Jupiter’s layers of this gas begin to get denser and denser as it gets closer to its centre. But in its outermost part, these gaseous layers are quite thin. Of course, even when you were at the very top of the gas layers, that is, about 300 thousand km away from the gas layers that can be called the surface, you would die from radiation poisoning in a very short time.

Let’s continue with the assumptions and assume that your special suit has superpowers to protect you from radiation. This time, due to the huge mass of Jupiter, your entry into the atmosphere would be so fast that you would be burned to ashes just like meteors burn when entering the Earth’s atmosphere.

Let’s say we solved this problem miraculously and we were able to reach the middle of the upper atmosphere. Here the pressure will be equivalent to the Earth’s surface pressure and you will begin to experience somewhat more humane conditions.

At this stage, you continue to fall; however, since the atmosphere is highly concentrated, your fall rate will be relatively slow; up to 3200 km/h… Fortunately, at least at this speed, you avoid getting burned.

Let’s assume you have a parachute to pass this part. As it passes this part, the temperature will also rise above zero and travel around Earth-like levels. To update the latest status; you have a special suit and parachute that protects from radiation; your rate of fall is slow, the temperature and pressure are close to Earth.

After 5 minutes, the pressure you feel will double. The clouds around you will change and will consist of ammonium hydrosulfite and ammonium sulfide. Although they may look different from normal clouds, they will start to look more and more brown as you go deeper.

Although it is not a normal situation, it will not touch too many drawbacks. During this time, pressure increases begin to occur faster, but you can overcome these changes in the first place.

After 10 minutes, the pressure will quadruple. This is equivalent to the pressure you would feel 30 meters under water. The temperature went down to -40 degrees. However, thanks to your special outfit, we can assume that you will not have a temperature problem.

Also, the clouds around you will be in the form of ice; You may notice that everything is getting darker as you get farther away from the surface and the Sun’s light will reach your location less. As if that were not enough, winds with a speed of 720 km per hour will also begin to appear.

After another 15 minutes, the pressure will reach 10 times the atmospheric pressure at the sea surface on Earth. At this point, the mixture of the air you breathe should have changed; because if you still breathe normal air, you can die instantly from oxygen poisoning.

As if that weren’t enough, you could also go into a coma or die from nitrogen. Fortunately, your magical special outfit also has the ability to set the mood. Thus, while adjusting oxygen and nitrogen, it will include the only two gases known to be non-toxic at low pressure, such as helium and neon, into the mix. While these are happening, the temperature outside will rise to 23 degrees again.

After 25 minutes you will notice that your surroundings are completely dark; The temperature will rise to 100 degrees. It will even reach 200 degrees in a few minutes. Things will get worse and the atmosphere consisting of hydrogen will begin to turn into a liquid state.

The temperature will rise to thousands of degrees, your body will burn into a substance like coal. The pressure will increase up to 1000, even 10 thousand times.

After a while, you will become completely liquid with a temperature close to 5000 degrees in your special clothing, which still manages to stand firm despite the pressure up to 2 million times.

Since liquids cannot be compressed even at this pressure value, you will continue to exist in your clothes in liquid form. Moreover, since the density of the planet reaches 1 g/cm³ here, the density of the layer around your body will be the same and you will stop sinking. In the end, your corpse and your special outfit will just sit there in the same spot forever.
