At this point, especially dogs mix their heads. Because a few commands they have learned make us think that they can understand us when they want.

So what’s the truth?

A number of dogs, monkeys and even dolphins, compared to the human beings, can understand the language of people.

For example, in a study, a Border Collie dog named Rico showed that he knew the name of more than 200 objects and that he could bring these objects with a command. Again, a similar study on Border Collie, a Chaser, revealed that Chaser could distinguish more than 1,000 different objects.

Even when Chaser asked for a toy he had never seen before, he was looking for, finding and distinguishing him among other toys. In addition, this dog was able to find foreign toys, thanks to their names just one month after being exposed to new objects just once before.

Surprisingly, he could also understand the objects and verbs used in different meanings. For example, with a command of the owner, he can put a ball on his nose, and take the ball from one place to the other place.

In addition, these capabilities are not only unique to the genus Border Collie. For example, a Yorkshire Terrier, compared to the findings of a study, can understand more than 120 words.

So how is the situation in animals that are not so strong with the human beings?

For example, Kanzi, a Bonobo monkey, was able to learn more than 3,000 English words thanks to many years of his instructor. The instructor would say the words from a different room, and the monkey listened to them from the headphones and pointed to the symbol represented by the special keyboard given to him.

In another study, the trainers used sounds and hand signs produced by the computer to connect with the dolphins who could follow the instructions of 2-5 words.

The dolphins were able to follow the objects placed in the tank 30 seconds after the commands were given, or if they could not fulfill the commands, the trainers could signal this.

So, where do you think we can get with all these results? In a way, animals can understand that people can understand the language. But of course this is not enough. Who knows, it may be possible to go much further with more comprehensive trainings.
