Both Microsoft and Sony presented their new generation consoles to gamers about 3 years ago. Almost all games released since that day offered support for both new generation consoles and old generation consoles. However, it is an inevitable fact that this situation will change one day and the old generation consoles will be ‘retired’ in a sense.

Until today, it was stated that the Call of Duty series, one of the most cult series of the game world, will cease support for old generation consoles as of this year. The latest information conveyed by Insider Gaming reveals that CoD enthusiast PlayStation 4 and Xbox One users should not be in a hurry to sell their consoles.

Activision may not be considering saying goodbye to older generation consoles yet

According to the information conveyed, Activision plans to release the Call of Duty game, which will be released in 2024, with the code name Cerberus, to older generation consoles. Since there is no official statement on this subject yet, it is useful to look at these claims with suspicion, but it is underlined that there are obvious references that Cerberus will come to old generation consoles in the Acticision documents leaked in December.

So, can Call of Duty 2024 really come to older generation consoles?

We have two notable arguments before us to say “Yes” to this question:

  • Call of Duty is being developed with the same game engine.
  • The new generation consoles did not reach the targeted total sales.

Unless the Call of Duty series moves to a new game engine, the possibility of support for older generation consoles will continue to be strong. Of course, the game engine is not the only factor that determines the system requirements of the games. Therefore, we cannot say for sure that older generation consoles will be supported, even if they come with the same game engine.

The most important point is the sales numbers of the new generation consoles. The COVID-19 pandemic, in particular, caused the PlayStation 5 to have stock problems for a long time. So much so that while Sony introduced the PlayStation 4 Pro 3 years after PlayStation 4, today, the stock problem of PlayStation 5 has just been fixed. Therefore, there is still a significant amount of older generation console players, and Activision may not want to ignore the millions of dollars that will come from these players.

Despite everything; Let’s not forget that all these are just rumors and leaks. Activision may change its decision until the game is announced.
