Boston Dynamics has released its latest demo showcasing the new capabilities of its humanoid robot Atlas.

Thanks to its feet, the robot could already run and jump on complex terrain. and now this robot has hands too. These simple grippers breathe new life into the robot. Instead of being an agile load-bearer, Atlas becomes a closer human being, with the ability to take and drop whatever he can independently.

The claw-like claw consists of a fixed finger and a moving finger. Boston Dynamics says the grapples are designed for heavy lifting tasks and were first shown in a Super Bowl commercial where Atlas holds a barrel over his head.

A new video released shows that the grapples can lift construction timber and a nylon toolbox. Next, Atlas takes a 2×8 piece and places it between the two boxes to create a bridge.

Atlas then grabs a toolbox and runs over the bridge he’s built. But the toolbox has to go to the second floor of the structure, something Atlas apparently noticed and he quickly throws the bag a considerable distance. Boston Dynamics explains this final maneuver: “Atlas’ final movement, an inverted 540-degree, multi-axis somersault, adds asymmetry to the robot’s movement, demonstrating that it can do a much harder course than before.”

Boston Dynamic’s Atlas is a research platform and is not for sale. It has long been the star of many viral videos and effectively showcases Boston Dynamic’s robotic abilities. In the tiny world of humanoid robots, few rivals have abilities similar to Atlas.
