Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Bosch said TSI Semiconductors will invest $1.5 billion over the next few years to carry out modernization and upgrades at its Roseville manufacturing facilities.
Good news for the automotive world
The German company aims to produce automotive chips on 200 mm wafers based on silicon carbide (SiC) by 2026. This development, that more chips will be produced on US soil, was especially welcomed in the automotive world.
As you know, automotive is one of the sectors most affected by the global semiconductor shortage that started with the Covid-19 pandemic. Most of the new electric vehicles launched today have advanced driver assistance systems that require multiple chips.
The silicon carbide-based chip market is growing at an average rate of 30% per year. Part of this growth is due to longer range and more efficient charging for electric vehicles. It also has advantages such as up to 50% less energy loss and less maintenance.
