Boom Supersonic shared the new design of the Overture supersonic passenger plane, which it says can fly twice as fast as existing passenger planes. Aiming to usher in a new era of sustainable, supersonic commercial travel, the company has already signed up with two airlines for aircraft in development.
Expected to be operational in 2029
Overture, which Boom says will run on 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), will have a range of 7870 km. The supersonic aircraft, which will come with a length of 61 m, a height of 11 m and a wingspan of 32 m, will fly at a speed of Mach 1.7 (approximately 2100 km / h). The aircraft can be produced with a passenger capacity of 65 to 80, depending on the airline’s request.
The supersonic aircraft, which will cruise on water at Mach 1.7, will cruise more quietly at speeds below Mach 1 over residential areas. The company says that Overture will also use the world’s first automatic noise reduction system. The aircraft will have a total of 4 engines integrated into the wings.
With the new design, they aim to minimize drag and maximize fuel efficiency. To achieve this, the rear of the aircraft’s fuselage has a thinner structure than the front.
US tests laser weapon on warplanes
Boom expects its supersonic aircraft to go into production by 2024. The company aims to begin flight tests of Overture by 2026 and to begin commercial operations of the aircraft by 2029. Regarding the aircraft under development, Boom has so far signed deals with United Airlines and Japan Airlines.
