Boeing Defense, the defense division of Boeing, has released the first video of the extra-large unmanned underwater vehicle Orca, or XLUUV. The Drive writes that the footage was taken during the submarine’s final sea trials.

The video lasts just 33 seconds, and the footage shows the upper part of Orca’s body looking out of the water. The date and place where the video was shot were not disclosed. The manufacturer shared the video on Twitter, noting that “enhanced autonomy allows the submarine to operate in open, congested and contentious waters for months with little or no human intervention.”

It has a range of 10 thousand kilometers

According to the source, one of the key features of the Orca is its quiet-running hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system. The batteries are charged by air-cooled diesel generators while operating at or very close to the surface.

The combination of a diesel engine and advanced lithium-ion batteries will keep the Orca at sea for months if the submarine moves at around three knots (5.5 km/h). The submarine has a top speed of 15 kilometers per hour and a range of approximately 10,000 kilometers.
