While electric cars are becoming more common day by day, manufacturers are choosing different names for their electric models to stand out. In its traditional internal combustion models, BMW uses the letter “i” in its electric vehicles.

BMW wants to solve the confusion caused by the letter ‘i’

The company’s characterization of its electric cars with the letter ‘i’ has caused some confusion. In order to solve this problem, the Bavarian manufacturer wants to eliminate the ‘i’ symbol used in some models and symbolizing fuel injection.

To give an example in the light of the information received; From now on, the BMW X5 xDrive40i will be referred to as the X5 40 xDrive. Similarly, the X5 M60i will continue on its way as the X5 M60 xDrive. Thus, BMW wants to eliminate the question mark created by the ‘i’ in the model name of the vehicles.

BMW introduced the ‘i’ to highlight this change in the transition from previous carbureted models to fuel-injected models. Although today all modern internal combustion vehicles are fuel-injected, BMW has continued this policy for over 50 years. With the start of the electric car era, it seems that this era will also come to an end.

On the other hand, with the increasing number and generalization of electric cars, brands may reconsider their naming policy in the future. As it is known in BMW, which emphasizes the letter ‘i’ in its electric models, Mercedes-Benz also collects its electric vehicles under the EQ model name.

However, with the increase in the use of electric vehicles, just as with the widespread use of injection engines, such naming can be said goodbye. In the coming years, it seems quite possible that only the name BMW 5 Series will be used instead of the BMW i5 with an electric motor.

Brands want to attract their customers with different names, especially in the transition to electric cars. However, we can say that with the changing time, there will be no need for these different names. So what do you think about electric BMW models and the naming policy of brands?
