Last week, Elon Musk kept his promise and the blue ticks were removed from old verified accounts that were taken for free. Among those unticked were thousands of accounts, from F1 pilots to global news agencies. As a result, users reacted seriously and said that the application was wrong. It looks like Twitter and Elon Musk are taking a step back.
Blue tick crisis continues on Twitter
It looks like a lot of high-profile accounts have already been re-verified, including a number of deceased celebrities. The reappearance of blue ticks could be part of a wider (but unannounced) plan by Twitter to re-verify users with over a million followers. On the other hand, interestingly, some deceased celebrities’ accounts have been re-verified, and Twitter tells you that these accounts have been “verified because they subscribed to Twitter Blue and verified their phone number.”
Michael Jackson, Chadwick Boseman, Kobe Bryant, Barbara Walters, Anthony Bourdain and Paul Walker are just a few of the many reaffirmed stars. In fact, the platform seems to claim to be making more than $8 a month despite the killing of prominent journalist and columnist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. Of course, this is the standard message that the platform presents in the blue tick description, but there is an insensitivity. In some cases, organizations that manage dead users’ accounts can be considered to apply for verification (for example, Bosewick’s account often retweets the Chadwick Boseman Arts Foundation). However, most of the re-verified accounts have been dormant for years.
As a result, whether approved or not, most users are dissatisfied with the way Twitter Blue operates. On the other hand, if we look at the situation from a different perspective, things have been normal for Twitter since November: Chaos continues to reign.
