The domains of nine digital currency exchanges allegedly aiding and abetting cybercriminals have been shut down by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Ukrainian law enforcement.
According to a statement made on May 1, the FBI’s Detroit Field Office and the National Police of Ukraine have launched an investigation into the websites of digital currency exchanges. This activity, authorized by the court, had great repercussions in the USA and Russia. According to the information, the digital currency exchanges under investigation allowed their users to bypass most of the rules and regulations required for licensed crypto exchanges. The FBI and Ukraine acted directly on the issue of “security”, which is one of the most criticized aspects of the industry.
Many Websites Closed
The websites, which are stated not to provide the necessary security measures, continue to be closed in line with the authorities given by the investigation. It has been reported that nine websites have been shut down so far. One of the reasons why the FBI and Ukraine got such a reaction was the rapid rise of the crypto market and the illegal events that followed.
While the investigation was continuing, many officials expressed their views on the subject. The bureau claimed that such rogue, unlicensed exchanges “serve as important hubs in the cybercrime ecosystem.” According to the agency, many of these virtual currency exchanges were “posted on online forums dedicated to discussing criminal activities.”
