Philip K. Dick’s ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’ Blade Runner (1982), adapted from the novel by the legendary director Ridley Scott, is undoubtedly one of the science fiction films that can be described as “cult”. The production, which takes place in a dystopian Los Angeles where androids and humans live, called Replicant, also had a sequel called “Blade Runner 2049” shot by Dennis Villenevue in 2017.
Last year, there was news that would delight the fans of the series, and the future of a series was announced. It was also announced that the series, in which Ridley Scott will be among the producers, will be called “Blade Runner 2099” and will be broadcast on Amazon Prime Video. Today, there is new news about the series.
Blade Runner 2099 series may be delayed by up to a year due to ongoing strikes in the US
The US Screenwriters Guild (WGA), which has thousands of members, launched a strike on May 2. The purpose of this strike, which caused many writers, including those working in major productions, to quit their jobs, was important issues such as poor conditions, low wages and the use of artificial intelligence. The authors wanted their wishes fulfilled in these matters.
The strike, which has been going on for about a month, also affected Blade Runner 2099. In the news first reported by the BBC, it was reported that the shooting of the series at Belfast Harbor Studios in Northern Ireland was delayed until the spring of 2024. WGA’s strike was also cited as one of the reasons.
The production company, Northern Ireland Screen, also stated that they were disappointed that the Blade Runner 2099 production could not continue at the moment due to the ongoing strike. Stating that they have been preparing for the project for months, the company added that they hope to be understood soon.
It’s not the first time WGA’s strike has stopped a major production. A few weeks ago, the final season of the popular Netflix series Stranger Things was also delayed. On the other hand, many films, series and programs in the country could not be shot for a while.
It is not yet clear when the second movie, Blade Runner 2099, will take place 50 years later. However, the information coming today reveals that we will wait more.
