BlackBerry, which has gained a good place in the phone market with its security, design and business-oriented structure, has become the focus of attention of young people rather than businessmen over time. The company, which officially threw a towel to the mobile sector in 2016, ended its phone production.

BlackBerry released the last smartphone it produced under its own brand in 2015, after which it licensed its name and software to other manufacturers. The company recently announced that it has decided to end the core services that support its phones.

BlackBerry phones lose support for cellular networks

The company announced that cellular network and Wi-Fi features will no longer be supported on its phones, with the announcement it shared on the Frequently Asked Questions page. BlackBerry announced its new decision, which will be effective from January 4, as follows:

Legacy services for BlackBerry 7.1 OS and earlier, BlackBerry 10 software, PlayBook OS 2.1 and earlier will no longer be available after January 4, 2022. As of this date, these legacy services and software via carrier or Wi-Fi connections will no longer work reliably, including data, phone calls, SMS and 9-1-1 functions.

BlackBerry released the first version of its mobile operating system in 1999 under the name BlackBerry OS. In May 2011, the company announced OS 7.0, the seventh generation of the Java-based platform. At the end of 2011, OS 7.1 update was launched, which supports new features such as NFC, Hotspot for internet sharing, and BB Tag.

The new generation BlackBerry 10 mobile operating system based on the Unix-based QNX platform was included in the phones, which were put on sale since the first quarter of 2013. But the company shelved it simultaneously with its withdrawal from the phone business. Therefore, the decision, which will enter into force on January 4, will affect very few people.

The company said it will keep users’ personal information in case it is needed by law, and delete it if it is no longer needed. He also shared the information that he will continue to offer BBM Enterprise and BBM Enterprise for Individual Use (BBMe) services on other platforms.
