The world’s richest business person, Elon Musk’s crazy project, Neuralink, continues to make a name for itself. The company, which was founded in San Francisco in 2016 to develop implantable brain-machine interfaces, recently announced that it has hired a clinical research director to develop a chip that will be implanted in people’s brains to record and stimulate brain activity.
Neuralink likened to “The Entire History of You”
The project sparked a stir on social media after news broke that Neuralink had hired a clinical research director. With this move, it is stated that the company will start human trials. Although the idea of implanting a chip in the human brain is humorous by some on social media, it is met with concern by a significant portion.
The subject has been compared to Black Mirror’s “The Entire History of You” episode on social media. So much so that in this episode, he talked about a brain implant device that allows people to record visual and auditory memories and watch them again later. Some Twitter users, on the other hand, likened the project to the “Be Right Back” episode of the same series after Musk’s statements. In the said section, artificial intelligence was integrated into a physical human body.
Although the Neuralink project is based on the frightening idea of implanting a chip in the brain, the company argues that it is for human health. It has been repeatedly stated by the company and Elon Musk that this chip is intended to have medical applications such as the treatment of spinal cord injuries and neurological disorders.
The brain implant was previously tested on pigs and monkeys as part of the project. Musk announced that for tests on humans, it first marked 2020 and then postponed. No FDA approval has yet been received for the human trial. However, it was stated that the clinical research director hired would be directly responsible for FDA regulations.
