After the Kahramanmaraş earthquake that took place on February 6, 2023, people are still following the rescue efforts with miraculous anticipation. Struggling with cold weather conditions on the one hand and fearing another earthquake on the other, the people caught the interesting activity on the Kuşkayası Mountain this morning.
As of this morning, ‘smoke’ started to rise from Göksun Kuşkayası mountain located in Büyükkızılcık district of Kahramanmaraş. It didn’t even stop there. The people saw a black liquid flowing from the mountain.
Naturally, this situation caused the local people there to fear volcanic activity.
Scientist Ramazan Demirtaş made a heart-warming statement.
Geological engineer, who has many national and international publications and books on earthquake research and active faults, disaster hazards and risks, mitigation and disaster management. Ramazan Demirtaş sprinkled water on hearts by telling what happened in this video on his official Twitter account.
To a citizen who sent him the known video, Dr. Demirtaş said that the resulting fumes were avalanches triggered by the main shock or the big aftershock. Therefore, the fumes that come out are not lava smoke, but dust.
Regarding the flowing black liquid, Dr. Demirtaş stated that it is shale. Shale is a type of sedimentary rock composed of silt and clay. It is also called mudstone among the people. He explained the reason why it became liquid as ‘soil flow + avalanche’.
On the other hand, Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan’s statements were confusing
Professor Doctor Övgün Ahmet Ercan also made a statement on Twitter on the same video. In his statement, Ercan mentioned the severity of the earthquake and stated that a baby volcano had formed in Kahramanmaraş. However, since there is no confirmed information, this statement is confusing for now.
