Some of the funds stolen from Bitfinex, the crypto-asset trading platform, were recovered in 2016. 64,643 BTC, corresponding to approximately $2.5 billion, was moved to unknown wallets in 21 different transactions.
Bitfinex, one of the leading crypto asset trading platforms, was exposed to an attack that resulted in the loss of 119,756 BTC in 2016. As of today, the attackers have moved as much as 64,643 BTC of these funds, transferring them to unknown wallets in 21 large and small transactions. The transaction was detected by crypto-asset tracking bot Whale Alert. A Bitfinex spokesperson told The Block that almost all of the stolen funds (99.9%) were moved along with these funds. The remaining 14 Bitcoins have not been moved yet.
At the time Bitfinex was hacked, the stolen funds amounted to $66 million. At today’s prices, that’s roughly $5 billion. Trying to recover the stolen funds, the platform has managed to recover 50 BTC so far. The spokesperson said that the platform continues to work with law enforcement, crypto-asset trading platforms and wallet providers globally to recover these funds.
