A study by the BIS found that nine out of ten central banks are investigating CBDCs.
According to a study conducted by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in 2021 that included 81 central banks, nine out of ten central banks in the world are researching central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). The survey reveals that more than half of central banks have developed CBDCs or are conducting concrete experiments, and also shows that banks are developing CBDCs for individual use rather than CBDCs for corporate use.
In September 2021, the BIS signaled to central banks to begin work on CBDCs. In particular, with China taking the lead in this regard, some governments began to see CBDCs as a playground for monetary sovereignty.
