Vaccine studies around the world continue unabated and the agenda is now focused on vaccination studies and third dose applications in children. Research on the vaccination of children in the USA gained momentum. In this context, it was announced last week that the BioNTech vaccine is 90.7 percent effective in children aged 5 to 11 years.

Now, the US Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken a big step and approved the use of BioNTech between the ages of 5 and 11. This decision will pave the way for the vaccination of approximately 28 million children in the USA. It is stated that this is an important development regarding the course of the epidemic at a time when the effect of the development, especially face-to-face education in schools, on the number of cases is discussed.

‘The decision will bring us closer to returning to normal’

Making a statement on the subject, FDA official Dr. Janet Woodcock “As a mother and doctor, I know that parents, caregivers, school staff and children await this leave. “Immunizing younger children against Covid-19 will bring us closer to a return to normalcy.”

The decision came after the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biologicals Advisory Committee’s recommendation to administer the BioNTech vaccine at a rate of 1/3 the normal dose to the 5-11 age group. On November 2-3, an independent advisory committee from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will vote on whether the vaccine should be recommended for this age group.

After the vote, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky will make the final decision on the committee’s recommendation. After Walensky signs the committee’s resolution, the US will be able to start vaccinating children aged 5 to 11.
