The Electronic Entertainment Expo game fair, known as E3, has been going through tough times over the past few years. The COVID-19 pandemic in particular has hit E3, like all major trade shows. But those tough times may not be over yet, at least for E3.
It seems that the major game console manufacturers will not appear at the E3 of 2023. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo will not be present at E3 2023, which will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center from June 13-16, according to a report from IGN citing anonymous sources.
So far, none of the game console companies have confirmed or denied this claim. If true, this would be a huge loss for E3 2023.
E3 2023 will be the first face-to-face E3 since 2019. 2020 was canceled entirely due to the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic. E3 2021 was organized as a completely virtual event, and E3 2022 was canceled as well.
ReedPop, the organizer of E3, who took over the management of the trade show on behalf of the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), said that the invitations were sent at the beginning of January 2023 and they received great attention from many top game companies. But Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo were not mentioned in this statement either.
In fact, Sony didn’t attend the last in-person E3 event in 2019 either. Therefore, the claim seems realistic, at least from Sony’s point of view. The fact that Nintendo, and especially Microsoft, has given great support to past E3s causes us to approach this claim with skepticism at some point.
