Establishing an internet connection without being dependent on a cellular network may be possible for Android users in the future. Hiroshi Lockheimer, senior vice president of Google, announced on Twitter that future Android versions may support direct satellite links.
Lockheimar did not provide further information beyond that. However, the upcoming Android version he mentions is thought to be 14. In order for mobile phones to establish a direct satellite connection, their hardware must also support this, and this is not possible on entry-level Android devices. However, it is thought that big companies such as Samsung will add the satellite connection option to their flagship models without hesitation.
A direct satellite connection will offer very useful options such as communicating in areas not covered by the cellular network and sending messages from anywhere in the world in case of emergency.
