According to the latest report from Canalys, tablet sales are falling as demand declines after the epidemic. The analyst firm found that as the boom in business tablets began to subside, tablet sales fell from 39,716 to 38,595, down 2.8% year-on-year.
However, Amazon managed to break the trend as tablet sales rose 3.3% and the company’s market share rose from 8.7% to 9.2%. Canalys attributes Amazon’s relatively good performance to massive discounts on the Amazon Fire tablet lineup.
Apple holds the lead in the worldwide tablet market with a distribution of 14.88 million units and a market share of 38.6%. However, the total number of distributions has decreased by 2% compared to the first quarter of 2021.
According to the results of the research, Samsung saw a 1.7% decrease in total distribution compared to the same time period in 2021, taking second place with a 20.4% market share and 7.86 million units.
Research indicates that not all tablet providers are equally affected by market change. Huawei and Lenovo, for example, are among the companies that were particularly hard hit, with sales declines of 21.7% and 20%, respectively.
Things are not going well for the PC market either
As the hybrid working trend that started with the epidemic lost its effect, it should not be considered a big surprise that tablet sales fell. Moreover, the tablet market is not the only area to feel this decline.
The broader laptop and PC market also performed poorly, with overall distribution down 2.9% from 2021, Canalys said.
Nearly five million Chromebooks were distributed worldwide in the first quarter of 2022, with all major vendors experiencing double-digit drops in their distribution. Analysts attribute this to the decline in the number of education-related purchases.
According to Canalys, the tablet market also faces an uncertain future in terms of supply chain. The war between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the ongoing Covid-19 quarantines in China, could cause permanent problems for tablet production.
