TikTok, launched by Chinese technology company ByteDance in 2016, has increased its popularity in recent years. In the past period, parents have expressed their concerns about the application, which is actively used by children and young people in our country. Thereupon, it became the agenda on Twitter with the hashtag TikTok to be closed for the second time after October.
‘TikTok should be shut down!’ it’s trying!
TikTok is the subject of frequent debates, sometimes initiated by users and not approved by the public, and sometimes due to its own policies. For this reason, it became the agenda on Twitter with the hashtag “Let TikTok be shut down” for the second time.
According to research done by media review company NewsGuard last October, the platform was showing anti-vaccine videos containing misleading information about Covid-19 to children under the age of 13. Similarly, it is stated that many research companies ignore what they say they oppose on the grounds that the platform brings more views.
However, it is claimed that ByteDance, which says that it has teams fighting wrong information and trends in the application that will mislead the society, closed its eyes in the face of high views.
University of Illinois Dr. Katrine Wallace said in an interview with Insider that TikTok’s teams working on the subject are acting very slowly on purpose. Allegedly, if a video is on the trends list and is watched by millions of people, even if it contains incorrect information and bad example, the application does not interfere for a long time.
On the other hand, TikTok says that it carries out sensitive studies on such issues and removes millions of videos that provide false information and share prohibited content every day. But it can’t prevent some currents. For example, the “slap your teacher” trend, which started in the USA last year, was quickly adopted by people under the age of 18 all over the world.
In our country, it is estimated that the main reason for the disease that people put on Twitter’s agenda is the movements and shares of some people just to be watched more. For example, as you can see in the tweet below, a person is joking in his own way and deceiving people who are waiting for the prayer to break their fast on the beach in Ramadan. It is argued that the number of such people is increasing, and therefore the platform should be closed.
