In the rapidly stiffening competitive environment of the foldable phone market, remarkable news came from Oppo. Saying that the Find N3 Flip and Find N3 foldable devices have been certified by TUV Rheinland for up to 1 million folds, Oppo seems to have surpassed Samsung’s Z Flip and Fold devices in terms of durability.
Interestingly enough, after launching the Find N3 Flip in August, the company had said that the device was rated for 600,000 folds. But after the Find N3 was introduced in October, the company surprised by saying that both devices can withstand up to 1,000,000 folds.
It’s unclear exactly why this rating changed. Perhaps the methodology has changed, but there is no information about it. Perhaps Oppo made a guess when talking about 600,000 folds and the phones performed better than expected at TUV Rheinland.
On the other hand, Samsung uses a different certification body to rate the durability of its foldable phones. Collaborating with Bureau Veritas, the company has officially rated the Galaxy Z Flip 5 as suitable for 200,000 folds.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 surpassed this figure in a rigorous independent test that pitted the phone against the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra. The Z Flip 5 completely broke down after 400,000 folds and being completely covered in flour, eggs, sugar, and cornmeal.
So far, other foldable phones have never been able to surpass the durability of the Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold series. However, Oppo foldable phones may have much higher durability. On the other hand, it should be noted that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 have an IPX8 waterproof rating, while Oppo’s foldable devices only have an IPX4 rating.
