Wanting to appeal to more users in the electric car market, BMW accelerated its work. BMW announced that it has established a facility on its Leipzig campus to manufacture batteries for electric cars. Here are the details…

BMW builds battery plant for electric cars

Investing $1.7 billion in its South Carolina manufacturing facility, BMW aims to be among the big players in the electric vehicle industry. Announcing that it will develop its electrification strategy, the company announced that it will produce batteries for the all-electric Mini Countryman at its new battery plant.

Officials who made a statement on the subject said, “Our Leipzig facility continues to gain strength. By producing the BMW i3, we became the BMW Group’s pioneer in the field of electromobility. Now, with the development of e-component production and the imminent launch of the Mini Countryman, the future is being reshaped.”

According to the statement, the company will also prioritize sustainability in the battery facility it has invested in. Equipped with 3,000 kilowatts (kW) solar panels and more than 5,700 trees, BMW’s new facility will aim for a minimal carbon footprint.

The first phase of the facility will be completed by the half of 2024. The facility will serve as BMW’s EV logistics facility, housing the high-voltage battery components for the automaker’s electric models. When fully completed, it will host 500 new jobs in the Leipzig region.

BMW has announced that one-third of the vehicles sold by 2026 will be fully electric. It is estimated that the company will soon establish a battery plant for electric vehicles in the USA.
