Barbie, which was released last month, continues to break box office records in cinemas around the world, despite weeks after its release. However, the information now reveals that the production by Greta Gerwig can no longer be shown in a country.
Algeria’s Minister of Culture demanded that Barbie be withdrawn from cinemas in the country immediately. The film had been shown in Algeria for three weeks and was watched by an estimated 40,000 people. It was even said that every day since its debut, all tickets are sold out.
Algeria says film promotes homosexuality and harms moral values
Algerian authorities stated that the reason why Barbie was banned was that it “damaged moral values”. An official speaking to Reuters added that the film promotes homosexuality and does not conform to Algeria’s religious and cultural beliefs.
Algeria is not the first country to impose a ban on Barbie for similar reasons. Previously, Kuwait had banned the film for ideas that did not fit the country’s society and order. There was also talk that such a decision could come from Lebanon.
Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the production, which brings the iconic doll Barbie to the big screen, continues its success despite such news. The movie has managed to gross $1.187 billion worldwide so far. If it continues like this, it will soon be Warner Bros.’s highest-grossing film.
