BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts), which distributes prestigious awards on games besides cinema and television, held this year’s BAFTA Game Awards in London yesterday. Dozens of games competed for prizes from many different categories.
Of course, one of the most curious categories was the “Best Game” award. The winner of the grand prize was a production that surprised everyone. The popular indie game of recent times, Vampire Survivors, managed to win the grand prize by beating its fierce rivals such as Elden Rings and God of War: Ragnarök.
Vampire Survivors wins Best Game Design in addition to the Best Game award
The awards won by the game developed by Poncle were not limited to this. The production, which was released towards the end of 2022, was also awarded in the “Best Game Design” category. Here, too, Elden Ring managed to surpass productions such as God of War: Ragnarök and Horizon Forbidden West.

Voting Vampire Survivors as the best game didn’t just surprise the audience like us. A post shared by the game’s official account showed that those in Poncle were also very surprised by this award. The following statements were used in the post: “Sorry, what’s going on? Thanks a lot.”
Vampire Survivors, which you can access on the Steam page here, is a fantasy horror game with rogu-lite elements, where you try to survive by fighting against hundreds of monsters that come upon you. The production has also been receiving great praise lately. David Brevik, the creator of the Diablo series, recently praised Vampire Survivors and said that the game made him want to make smaller games. On the other hand, Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, said that he could not stop playing the game.
We can say that it is quite impressive that a small game like Vampire Survivors won such a big award at the prestigious BAFTA ceremony, surpassing giant games like Elden Ring. This shows that the high budget does not show the quality of the game, and that such small games can attract a lot of attention and be successful.
