Netflix has dealt its first serious blow to password sharing. The application for users who share their passwords in the United States has been officially launched.

In the most serious step of a long-planned move to limit password sharing, the streaming giant has now begun emailing all US subscribers who share passwords with people outside of their households. The email reads “Your Netflix account is for you and the people you live with – your household,” along with options for how to share the account from now on.

To share an account with someone outside the household, a user can link this profile to their membership by paying for it. A monthly fee of $7.99 is required for each member added to the account.

Netflix has long been turning a blind eye to password sharing as it accelerates growth. But last year, after its bottom line in the bottom line, it announced it would take a hard hit to password sharing. Currently, it is estimated that more than 100 million households worldwide share an account.

Netflix recently announced that there was a 5% increase in the number of subscribers in the first quarter compared to the same period of the previous year. That translates to an increase of 1.75 million global streaming subscribers.
