Apple, with its official statement today, announced that iPhone 6 Plus devices will be included in the nostalgic (vintage) product category. In this sense, the iPhone 6 Plus, which will be a nostalgic product as of December 31, 2021, will not be able to be repaired by Apple Authorized Service Providers or Apple-contracted service points.

iPhone 6 Plus will now be a nostalgic product

According to the internal Apple company correspondence captured by MacRumors, the famous American giant will soon update the nostalgic product list and include the iPhone 6 Plus in this category. The device, which will enter the 5th year of the end of production on December 31, 2021, will now be called a nostalgic device from the new year and the service will be stopped after a while.

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, released in September 2014, featured the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screens that customers have long been waiting for. Both devices have become some of the most popular smartphones Apple has ever sold.

Although production of the iPhone 6 Plus was discontinued in 2016, the iPhone 6 was available for purchase through select retailers in select regions until at least 2018. There is at least 2 more years for the iPhone 6 to enter the nostalgic product category.

What is a nostalgic (Vintage) product?

For a product to be included in the nostalgic (vintage) category by Apple, it must first stop production and at least 5 years must pass since the production stopped. Any product that is included in the nostalgic product category by Apple cannot receive service from Apple Authorized Service or contracted repair and hardware partners.

In this sense, if you have a nostalgic Apple device and your device breaks down, you will have to have the repair done by a service provider that does not have an agreement with Apple. In this sense, you will not be able to have your iPhone 6 Plus repaired by Apple any time soon.

The only exception in Apple’s nostalgic product policy is France. Any iPhone or Mac purchased in France after December 31, 2020 can be repaired at Apple Authorized Services for 7 years, even if the product is classified as nostalgic.

So what do you think about Apple’s nostalgic product classification? Do you think this practice causes devices to have a shorter lifespan? Do not forget to share your views with us in the comments section.
