Metaverse, one of the most popular topics of today, aims to bring our virtual and real worlds together in the future. Today, platforms such as The Sandbox and Decentraland are giving a taste of the metaverse experience with virtual reality platforms that are not yet reflected in our real life. In fact, with the popularization of the metaverse, these platforms started to deal with big names.

Decentraland, one of the most popular 3D virtual reality platforms, has just recently signed with Samsung to host Samsung’s iconic store. Today, there has been another important development about Decentraland. The Australian Open, the first of four world Grand Slam tennis tournaments, will also take place in Decentraland.

What will the Australian Open offer on Metaverse?

Tennis Australia, Australia’s tennis sport governing body, has partnered with Decentraland and set out to host the first official Grand Slam tournament in the metaverse. As part of this partnership, parts of Melbourne Park, where the tournament was held, were virtually recreated on Decentraland.

In the first tennis tournament to enter the Metaverse, players will not be playing tennis. Instead, they will be able to watch the Australian Open live from the assembly area and access the archive of tennis matches dating back to the 1970s. They will also be able to meet up with Mark Philippoussis and real tennis players yet to be announced.

In addition, of course, NFTs will be a part of this partnership, as with most things that enter the metaverse. The Australian Open announced that it has signed with NFT platform Sweet and will release 6 NFT collections representing the tournament held in the last 5 years.
