In the newly developed system of the automotive giant, the grille of the vehicle also acts as an air filter and ensures that the air around the vehicle is cleaned. Audi cooperates with one of its suppliers, Mann+Hummel, to ensure that the filters also have a certain quality standard.
Test results are promising
Fabian Groh, the head of the company’s accessory system development department, states that the test results of the project were successful, and that it may even be necessary to have such systems in vehicles in the future.
The grille placed on the front grille works in two different ways. The first of these is the filtering that takes place while the vehicle is running. In this method, as the vehicle progresses, the air entering through the grille is filtered as it passes through the filter. In the second method, while the vehicle is charging, the air drawn into the filter with the help of a fan is filtered and released again.
In the tests carried out since 2020, Audi stated that the new system did not cause any problems in the cars for 50 thousand kilometers. On the other hand, it is stated that the air purification feature is active only when the vehicle is in the charging state. The reason why the system does not work while the vehicle is stationary is of course to prevent the vehicle from running out of battery. According to the company’s claim, the filter system is so successful that it has succeeded in cleaning the air more than the amount of substance that makes up the vehicle itself.
