Signal captured from galaxy 9 billion light-years away
Scientists the other day managed to do something that we previously thought was impossible. Scientists have broken new ground by capturing a special kind of radio signal from a floating galaxy about 9 billion light-years from Earth. This latest development was published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal.
These signals, from when the universe was much younger, have created great excitement. We can characterize this time period as a period long before the realization of our Solar system and the emergence of life as we know it.
These signals from our universe, which is only 5 billion years old, were captured at a wavelength of 21 cm, or the so-called Hydrogen line. It is becoming possible to know more and more about the universe with a view into a very long distance.
Hydrogen lines, a 21 cm wavelength radiation emitted by nebulae in space, were first discovered in 1951. This allowed us to look at the fascinating spiral structure of the Milky Way, observe in and out of our galactic neighbor Andromeda, and study the luminous haze of the Magellanic nebula.
Considering that Andromeda is only 2.5 million light-years from Earth, the new signals being 8.8 billion light-years away sounds pretty impressive. The new findings will contribute to our understanding of galaxies much further away.
