Last Wednesday (March 23), NASA astronaut Raja Chari and Matthias Maurer of the European Space Agency spent nearly seven hours outside the International Space Station doing various maintenance work. Surprisingly, space photographer Sebastian Voltmer was able to capture a snapshot of the ‘spacewalk’ action from Maurer’s hometown of Germany.
The photographer also shared the photos in the tweet, “Yesterday I witnessed the spacewalk shortly after sunset. Here is the first photo. Matthias Maurer was just ‘climbing’ at that time. Rod-shaped structure (Canadarm2) Robot arm of the ISS. Greetings from Matthias Maurer’s hometown, it was very exciting.” Using his expressions, he shared his excitement about these rare photographs.

Photographer Voltmer explained the details of the photograph with a second post he made. As the annotated image indicates, two astronauts named Maurer and Chari are indeed visible around the International Space Station. Voltmer, with the help of photographer Phillip Smith, confirmed and detailed what was seen in the image, making this exciting image more understandable for everyone.
Voltmer said after sharing the photo, “I feel like I’ve captured a once-in-a-lifetime image. This is probably the first ground-based photograph ever taken from the ground that shows two astronauts ‘spacewalking’ at the same time aboard the International Space Station.” . Voltmer also gave information about the devices he used in his shooting. The photographer said he used the çCelestron 11-inch EdgeHD telescope and an ASI290 planetary camera.
