Home Security Heroes, a cybersecurity company, has released a report showing how powerful and fast artificial intelligence is at cracking passwords.Researchers tested the capabilities of PassGAN, a new AI-based tool, on more than 15.6 million passwords. Results: AI was able to crack 51% of common passwords in less than a minute, 65% in less than an hour, 71% in less than a day, and 81% in less than a month. PassGAN takes about six minutes to crack any 7-digit password, even if it contains symbols.
How do I make sure AI can’t crack my password?
The hardest passwords to crack are those with at least 12 characters. Assuming lowercase and uppercase letters are added, it would take 289 years for AI to crack such a password. Adding numbers to a password takes up to 2,000 years to crack, and up to 30,000 years if symbols are added. Increasing the number of characters increases the strength of the password, even if only numbers are used.
The company’s website has a tool that predicts how fast the AI will crack a given password. The system indicates that the password “59731469” will be cracked “instantly” (2 seconds), while the password “Hj2Bue4F” will take 48 minutes to crack.
