Twitter CEO Elon Musk added a new one to his moves that surprised everyone, and this time threatened to sue Microsoft. On Wednesday, Musk accused the software giant of illegally using Twitter data to train its AI model.

“They trained illegally using Twitter data,” Musk tweeted, adding: “It’s time to sue.” Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has tweeted similar threats of lawsuits before, but these have never resulted in lawsuits.

Musk’s threat can be considered as the last indication that data ownership is rapidly turning into a tense battlefield in these days when we are experiencing a productive artificial intelligence storm. Big tech companies are working to develop cutting-edge AI models like OpenAI’s GPT, and data owners are trying to stop them or charge for the use of their content.

Microsoft invested $10 billion in OpenAI last year in an unusually structured deal. Musk was a co-founder of OpenAI before leaving the board in 2018, and he doesn’t seem too happy about the company’s recent transition from a nonprofit model to a highly valuable business under Microsoft’s influence.

As new AI models move from research labs and universities to the corporate world, it’s no surprise that data owners are starting to make demands. Universal Music Group, for example, in response to a viral video of a song claiming to use AI to impersonate rapper Drake, said that such music training by artists would constitute “both a breach of agreements and a violation of copyright law.” And stock photography database Getty Images is suing Stable Diffusion, alleging that the company copied its content to train its AI image generator.

Elon Musk, on the other hand, announced in a statement he made recently that he is working on an artificial intelligence model called TruthGPT.
