A research team at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China has created a new artificial intelligence that uses optical coherence tomography (OCT) images to automatically detect plaque erosion in the arteries of the heart. Wang says their new AI-based method can detect the problem using the original OCT images and without any additional input. In the explanations, it is stated that an artificial intelligence model can make predictions using hand-held images. In addition, the researchers added that the artificial intelligence system accurately predicts 80% of the cases.
Stating that more research is needed for the method, experts still say that artificial intelligence can be used to develop new treatments. Wang, too, thinks the system, which is still in development, could be used to diagnose and treat things like coronary artery disease.
