Recently, visuals produced by artificial intelligence such as DALL-E, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion have attracted great attention. Basically, you write what you want for the visual of these artificial intelligences, and these artificial intelligences prepare the visual you want for you, in the style you want.
Getty Images has banned images created with these artificial intelligences. Thus, Newgrounds became the largest platform to take a decision in this direction after PurplePort and FurAffinity. The reason for this decision of the company is that they do not want users to be sued in the future.
Getty Images’ decision will fuel controversy
In fact, serious discussions were going on about the sale of artificial intelligence-produced artifacts. Basically, one group says, “Artificial intelligence is the tool I use instead of a brush or computer, the ideas come out of my mind, I evaluate and share the image”, while another group does not find this ethical and in summary “Is it art by writing two sentences?” says. In addition, serial production of images also creates ethical debates.
In a statement, Getty Images CEO Craig Peters explained the reasons for banning art produced with artificial intelligence. The fact that artificial intelligence is trained on existing images is a situation that may create copyright problems in the future. For example, an artist might say “artificial intelligence has reproduced my original work here, I want copyright”. The CEO of Getty Images says that he has taken a ban decision to prevent those who buy images from the platform from engaging in such discussions.
People who develop this type of artificial intelligence argue that this technology is legal. However, there is no guarantee that this situation will not be open to discussion. For example, if you are a student, if you use an image for your project, no one will sue you for copyright, but using images for commercial purposes is outside the fair use conditions that artificial intelligence also benefits. That’s why some artists are already requesting editing.
While artificial intelligences like DALL-E are allowed to use human faces, such ethical debates show that we have an interesting process in front of us. Do you think the images produced with artificial intelligence should be able to be sold?
