The British government has pledged $124.8 million in funding to create a task force dedicated to the development of secure artificial intelligence.
The UK is accelerating its efforts to develop the country’s technology sector. A task force will be created to help speed up the country’s readiness for AI, the UK Prime Minister and Minister of Technology announced on April 25.
Trial Studies Will Start in Six Months
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said that artificial intelligence offers many opportunities for advances in economic growth, health and safety.
Rishi Sunak continued: “By investing in emerging technologies through our new expert task force, we can be part of shaping a more innovative UK economy and continue to lead the way in AI development.
This move by the UK coincides with its commitment to become a science and technology superpower by 2030.
According to the announcement, the first pilot trials of AI use and integration are expected to focus on utilities and launch within the next six months. Authorities in the UK are also pushing for safe AI, meaning the technology is regulated to keep people safe without limiting innovation.
Making a statement on the subject, UK science, innovation and technology secretary Michelle Donelan said that if developed responsibly, artificial intelligence can transform any industry.
