Carnegie Mellon University Establishes Artificial Intelligence Institute

Backed by a $20 million fund from the federal government, Carnegie Mellon University has created a new US-based artificial intelligence institute. According to information from a local news source, the university in Pittsburgh has received funding for the Artificial Intelligence Institute for Social Decision Making.

The Institute will promote the development of artificial intelligence tools to assist decision-making processes in social events such as natural disasters and public health. The institute’s director will be Aarti Singh, a professor in the university’s machine learning department.

One of the institute’s primary goals has been described as developing “human-oriented” artificial intelligence. Singh used the following statements in his statements:

“We need to develop artificial intelligence technology that works for humans. This is based on vetted data, vetted algorithms, feedback from all stakeholders, and participatory design. I believe AI can play an important role in helping decision makers and authorities make more informed decisions in different scenarios. Researchers at the institute will consult with public health officials, emergency managers, community workers, and behavioral and cognitive science experts as they develop and train the new technology.”

In addition, Singh pointed out that ethical use is a “core goal” at the institute and developers and researchers need to be “careful” in this process. Singh stated that it is important to engage with AI in an ethical way and to deploy it when necessary.
