Artificial intelligence technologies have started to be used actively in all areas of our lives. In some countries and regions, artificial intelligence is now used to identify people by face. But today we are here with the mistake of artificial intelligence that cost a person their day.
Authorities in the US state of Louisiana arrested a different person after artificial intelligence gave the wrong result in a theft case. Moreover, this person had never visited the state in his life, let alone living in Louisiana.
Artificial intelligence failed to distinguish black people from each other:
The incident in question occurred on November 25. Randall Reid, 28, was detained in the state of Georgia, which has no land connection to Louisiana. Reid was held responsible for robberies in two different counties in the state in July.
The reason for Reid’s detention was due to the artificial intelligence’s malfunctioning of the face detection system. Moreover, the incident also created controversy about the success of artificial intelligence on black people. Reid was black, the same as the thief who committed the robbery.
But the two people were actually nothing alike. The person who carried out the robbery was about 20 kilograms heavier than Reid, and had different facial features.
Authorities only realized the distinction between Reid and the real thief after comparing them with their own eyes. Reid’s release came six days after he was taken into custody.
