Researchers in the Intelligent Systems and Control department at Cornell University have developed a system that uses machine learning to accurately calculate the win rates of teams in various sports.
Can predict win rates with 80% accuracy
Silvia Ferrari, the head of the research team, explained the way the system works with the following words, “Thanks to machine learning, volleyball, basketball, football, ice hockey and similar sports that are open to everyone on the internet were examined and the posture, position and movements of each player in the team were examined by artificial intelligence. . After hundreds of hours of research, we created an algorithm, which allows us to create an artificial intelligence that can predict which team will win the game even before the first half of the game is over.”
Ferrari also announced that its team is currently trying to further develop artificial intelligence and that they want to reduce the error margin of the system to 1%. The system used is currently able to make 69% to 80% accurate predictions in both pre-recorded and live matches. These correct predictions include which team will win the match, which player will take position where, and even which players are likely to score.
In their statement, the team also stated that this machine learning algorithm can be used to learn human behavior outside of sports competitions. According to Ferrari, this system could be used in the future to create more realistic AI in the automotive industry, industry and even video games.
