Artificial intelligence, which we saw only in science fiction movies in the past, has started to have great importance in all areas of our lives in recent years. Countries and companies are also constantly working to understand how to use artificial intelligence most effectively. In fact, our country managed to become the first country to set ‘professional standards’ in the field of artificial intelligence.

Meta, one of the largest technology companies in the world, is constantly working in the field of artificial intelligence. Meta’s engineers working in the field of artificial intelligence announced that they created a fashion map of 37 cities around the world using millions of photos.

Artificial intelligence will follow future fashion trends

In the project prepared in partnership with New York Cornell University and Meta, more than 7 million photos shared publicly on Instagram and Flickr, classified according to the location where the photos were taken. Later, with the help of artificial intelligence, the clothes of the people in these photographs were determined and fashion maps of 37 cities were drawn.

The study determined that in most of Chicago and New York, men mostly wear suits and plain clothes, while women in the same region mostly prefer dark colored dresses. In Austin, Texas, women generally prefer floral and white dresses.

In Sydney, which is one of the largest cities in Australia, it was determined that individuals generally wore glasses, they wore sleeveless t-shirts and did not wear necklaces. In the study, maps were made for 37 cities full of such details.

May cause ‘algorithmic discrimination’

The project also used GeoStyle, an artificial intelligence software supported by Amazon. In the research, it was understood that different fashion trends are common in different parts of almost every city. Although Meta officials said that this research was carried out for purely scientific purposes, many experts announced that this and similar studies could result in “algorithmic discrimination”

Algorithmic discrimination is the use of artificial intelligence or computer-based software by separating individuals and groups from one group from another. It means to describe it as superior and privileged. In other words, experts fear that in the future artificial intelligence may ‘digital discrimination’ on people.

Meta announced that thanks to this research, artificial intelligence can predict fashion trends in the near future and even guide fashion.
