Perhaps all of the toxic behaviors that disrupt human relations, human rights and an egalitarian environment begin with language. The basis of most murder and harassment crimes, which have sources such as sexism, homophobia and racism, which you can see in the news, are the expressions that feed them in the languages we use. More and more people are becoming more aware of the language they use. However, a device developed by university students can speed up this process.
A device introduced at the ‘Global Grad Show’, where products developed by university students are exhibited, warns those around them and ensures that they do not stray from political correctness. Working with artificial intelligence, ‘Themis’ detects offensive expressions and ‘puts down’ the owner of the expression.

The ‘Global Grad Show’, which was recently held as part of Dubai Design Week, witnessed many interesting and innovative inventions. One of them was an artificial intelligence-supported device named after Themis, the goddess of justice and order. The task of this device is to select offensive and objectionable expressions from the conversations in the environment and to warn the person making the expression audibly.
Themis, which has a lamp-like shape, actively listens to conversations with the sensors on it. Thanks to artificial intelligence, the device, which takes the action when a politically incorrect statement is used, raises its voice and gives the person time to realize the mistake he has made. Speakers have the opportunity to apologize and think and discuss about the wrong done during this 2-minute period.
The reason behind the development of the device is to create an environment in society where each individual will be responsible for what they say and make decisions through empathy while speaking. After being tested for a while, it is thought that the device can be used in schools, in these educational environments where discriminatory expressions can be easily used by young people and can affect the other side.
