New news continues to come every day about artificial intelligence technologies that are expected to become widespread in the future. Last week, we shared with you that an artificial intelligence system may have created its own language. In addition, we have included the recent developments on this subject in one of our content.

There has been a very important development regarding these technologies, which are used in many fields from sports to medicine. Scientists stated that artificial intelligence can be used on a virus that causes diarrhea epidemics.

Artificial intelligence predicted the 3D structure of the Rota virus spike protein

First of all, let’s talk a little bit about Rota virus. This virus, which can cause gastroenteritis in humans, usually affects children and can cause diarrhea. This virus; It is divided into three groups, A, B, and C. While groups A and C usually affect children, group B can cause severe diarrhea in adults due to the spike protein called VP8*, which mediates the infection of the intestines. Scientists also say that the structure of the VP8* protein in group B, about which little is known, can be determined by artificial intelligence.

Research published on the subject showed that an artificial intelligence called AlphaFold2 could be used to predict the 3D structure of the VP8* protein. Experts first tried to determine the 3D structure of the virus with a method called X-ray crystallography; but this attempt failed. After that, AlphaFold2, an artificial intelligence-based computing program, was started to be used. The experts observed that AlphaFold2 was successful and that its predictions matched the actual structure of the protein.

One of the authors of the study, Dr. Liya Hu also said, “AlphaFold2 predicts the 3-dimensional structure of the protein according to its genetic sequences.” According to the statements, researchers are currently investigating how the VP8* protein in group B infects cells. However, it is stated that new treatments against the very common disease can be developed thanks to the predictions made by artificial intelligence.
