In Peru, a man was arrested with a 600- to 800-year-old mummy in his cooler bag.
Three men were drinking with him when the remains were found in a park in the city of Puno, police said.
Julio Cesar Bermejo, 26, told local media that the mummified remains were brought home by his father about 30 years ago. Bermejo told El Comercio that the mummy was like his “spiritual girlfriend,” and “at home, she’s in my room, sleeping with me. I’m taking care of him,” she said.
The mummy is believed to be an adult male, possibly from the same region of Peru, according to the Ministry of Culture. “This is not a Juanita, it’s a Juan,” said an expert from the ministry, France24 reported, adding that the male mummy was over 45 years old.
The mummy, which was in the fetal position in a cooler bag, was taken by the ministry and counted as a national cultural asset. Bermejo denied trying to sell the remains, telling police it was in a cooler bag in the park “because he wanted to see friends.”
Bermejo is in police custody as they investigate the case.
