According to market analyst firm Canalys, nearly one in three computers will run on an ARM processor by 2026. Additionally, the firm estimates that half of its cloud processors will be ARM-powered by the same year.

ARM-based chips have dominated the smartphone market for a long time, but they did not reach a significant audience in the PC space until Apple developed its own ARM-based processors. Windows on ARM has been around for a while, but it hasn’t started gaining momentum until this year.

One in three computers will use ARM by 2026

“Not in 2050, but in 2026, four years from now, half of cloud processors will be ARM-based, and 30 percent of computers will be ARM-based,” said Steve Brazier, Canalys President and CEO.

It should be noted that the industry analysis made includes all personal computers by the way. So not only Windows but also Macs and even ChromeBook PCs are covered in the estimation. On the other hand, reaching 30 percent PC market share by 2026 will require increased use of ARM processors in Windows devices, Macs and Chromebooks. Apple already uses ARM-based chips and it seems that they will continue to use these chips by improving them. Considering that Apple’s share in the PC market is 13.5%, it is seen that ARM should also spread especially on Windows devices.

In addition, Microsoft also highlighted ARM-based processors in the introduction of Windows 11 and used it in the Surface Pro 9. In addition to all this, the upcoming release of Qualcomm’s Nuvia-based PC processors, announced this week under the name “Orion”, is an important development.
