If you have recently had COVID, there is a good chance that you have been infected with the BA.5 variant. Although this new variant of COVID is not much different from the previous one, it is still seen as alarming.
The BA.5 is actually not a completely new variant and is a branch of the Omicron family. As can be seen from the times when hospitalizations due to COVID increased, we encountered many different variants, starting with Alpha, continuing with Delta, and once again causing the rapid spread of the disease with Omicron in late 2021. Now BA.5 and its close relative BA.4 are on the rise.
Fortunately, with the emergence of a new species, the immunity you previously acquired thanks to vaccines is not completely lost. Although the vaccine cannot provide complete immunity, a level of immunity is maintained, which is extremely important to avoid serious illness when you encounter the virus. Vaccines are the biggest reason for a very serious decrease in the number of hospitalizations due to COVID.
It is therefore of the utmost importance that we continue to use vaccines and other reasonable health measures en masse, as the epidemic is still not over.
