US-based technology giant Google has started to deliver a new feature it has prepared for the Android ecosystem to users. This feature, which was announced for the first time at the end of last year, provides automatic archiving of applications that are not actively used on the phone. This feature will be critical for users whose phone storage space is a problem.
iPhone owners may be saying from the very first paragraph that a feature like this has already been available in the iOS ecosystem for years. They’re right too. The application archiving feature will ensure that applications that are not actively used are partially deleted from the phone. According to Google, this new feature will save up to 60 percent of the storage space of the phones for each application.
So how will Android’s application archiving feature be used?
Let’s say you use some of the applications on your phone quite rarely. When you archive the app, you will still see the app icon on your phone. But it will have a transparent cloud icon on it. When you want to use the application again, simply tap the icon and wait for the download to complete. The user who prefers to keep the user data on the phone will continue to use the application after the download. If you want the data deleted, you will need to regain access to your account in that app.
However, not everyone will be able to benefit from this feature!
There is a serious deficiency in Google’s application archiving feature. In the statement made on the official website, we see that this feature cannot be activated by everyone. According to Google, the phone’s memory will need to be full to take advantage of this feature. The user who does not have enough free space for a new application will approve the pop-up notification and activate the automatic application archiving feature.
If the user activates this feature, rarely used applications will be archived automatically. Thus, the user will not have to deal with each application individually. In addition, this feature will only be available for applications with the “App Bundle” structure. There is nothing you can do as a user at this point. It’s up to the developer’s choice.
