A new report in The Information has revealed some new information about Apple’s upcoming augmented and virtual (mixed) reality headset. Among other things, the report details the different features of Apple’s title Meta from the recently announced Quest Pro, which will likely be Apple’s device’s biggest competitor.

Confirming previous reports, The Information’s article states that Apple’s mixed reality headset/helmet will resemble ski goggles in terms of design. Therefore, a simple but high-end design consisting of fabric, aluminum and glass may be waiting for us. On the other hand, it is reported that Apple’s headset is both thinner and lighter than the Quest Pro. There is no weight information yet, but the Quest Pro weighed approximately 722 grams.

Apple’s VR/AR headset could feature iris scanning

According to reports, the Apple mixed reality headset will come with an iris scanning feature that allows the user to detect the pupil. In this way, different people using the device can be detected. In addition, thanks to iris scanning, it will be possible to quickly log into accounts and perform transactions such as payments. In other words, Face ID or Touch ID, which are biometric authentication methods seen on iPhone, iPad and Mac, will be used in the title. Meta Quest Pro does not have such a feature.

Apple’s mixed reality headset will also have 14 cameras that can see feet. Thus, environment detection/scanning will be more advanced. The movements of the avatar in the virtual world will also be developed in this direction. On the other hand, Quest Pro has only 10 cameras.

Apple and Meta will compete intensely in the VR/AR space

Apple and Meta are preparing for a war in the mixed reality space. Meta has been in the VR business for seven years, but Apple has a stronger track record in AR, thanks to sensors and developer support on its iPhones and iPads. Meta’s Quest Pro will hit the market on October 25 with a price tag of $1,500. Apple’s answer is expected to come in 2023 with a higher price band. Time will tell us the winner of the war between the two giant companies.
