Apple is said to have spent at least $1 billion on microLED research and development over the past decade. The company plans to manufacture microLED chips directly on wafers.

It will be produced at Apple’s secret facility

Apple will work with ams-Osram for microLED components, LG Display for substrates, and TSMC for 12-inch chipsets. Production will take place at Apple’s secret R&D facilities in the Longtan District.

It will be used first on the Apple Watch Ultra

Apple has R&D teams working on displays in America, Taiwan, and Japan, and it is said to have designed not only driver integrated circuits for microLED displays, but also some production equipment to better control the mass transfer process. MicroLED display production is a challenging process, production costs are higher. That’s why Apple will use microLED displays in the Apple Watch Ultra before mass-producing it for iPhones.

The Apple Watch Ultra is not expected to use a microLED display until 2025. Therefore, the first iPhones with microLED screens will not be released next year for sure. The 2023 iPhone 15 series is expected to feature the same OLED display.
